Overview of the University of Évora
Founded in 1559, the University of Évora (Universidade de Évora) stands as one of Portugal’s oldest and most esteemed public institutions of higher learning. Situated in the historic city of Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site in southern Portugal, the university has a rich Jesuit heritage and was re-established as a modern institution in 1973. Today, it operates as a comprehensive university, serving approximately 9,000 students and supported by around 700 academic staff across four main faculties and several dispersed research institutes, thus offering both breadth and depth in education and research.
The University of Évora is recognized for its strengths in arts and humanities, architecture, environmental sciences, agricultural and veterinary sciences, and engineering. Its multidisciplinary academic model fosters an interdisciplinary approach, emphasizing research-led teaching, problem-based learning, and strong connections between theory and practice. The university has earned international recognition through its participation in European higher education consortia (notably, the E³UDRES² alliance) and global ranking listings, often noted for excellence in agriculture, environmental sciences, and archaeology. Research output is further strengthened by prominent centers such as the Institute of Earth Sciences (ICT) and the Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment, and Development (MED), alongside active partnerships with academic and industry stakeholders.
Student life at the University of Évora is vibrant and inclusive, enriched by a diverse community representing more than 50 nationalities. The main campus, set within the historic cloisters of the city, provides access to modern amenities, extensive student support services, and engagement opportunities. Students can participate in over 40 clubs and societies, ranging from music and drama to scientific associations. The university also offers on-campus housing, competitive sports programs, and a wealth of cultural events, taking advantage of Évora’s artistic and architectural legacy to foster a unique and supportive educational environment.
Guided by a mission to cultivate knowledge, sustainability, and global citizenship, the University of Évora is committed to equity, academic excellence, and innovation. It strives to positively impact society—locally and internationally—through education, research, and community engagement.
