Data Sources and Methodology
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Universities in United States Ranking is built upon comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable data providers. The bibliometric data used to devise the citation-based metrics were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring the most up-to-date dataset available at the time of compilation.
Positions in the ranking are determined by the sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all ranking scholars affiliated with each institution. The D-index focuses exclusively on publications and citation data relevant to the specific discipline under examination, while considering scientists from all major research areas. This approach ensures a nuanced and discipline-specific evaluation of research contributions at an institutional level.
Scope of Research
The ranking encompasses an extensive review of 279,971 scientist profiles identified through a variety of bibliometric data sources, covering all major scientific disciplines. To qualify for consideration, each scientist was required to meet a minimum D-index threshold of 20 in their respective field. In addition to bibliometric indicators, scientists’ awards and achievements within their domain were also taken into account to provide a more holistic view of their scholarly impact.
Verification Practices and Credibility Assurance
We acknowledge that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully represent the breadth and quality of scholarly output. Therefore, all scientist profiles were manually verified and cross-correlated against publications from a wide array of trustworthy sources to ensure accuracy and reliability. Although not directly contributing to a researcher’s numerical position in the Research.com ranking, the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings serves as a valuable secondary signal reflecting a scientist’s research contribution within their discipline.
The ranking position for each researcher is ultimately established using their H-index derived from data gathered through OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most prominent and trusted bibliometric databases available to the global research community. We encourage interested readers to explore the full details of our methodology on our methodology page.
