Sources of Data and Methodology
The 3rd edition of the Research.com Best Universities in Tanzania Ranking relies on a comprehensive and robust evaluation of scientific output and impact, utilizing data primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef, among multiple other authoritative sources. The bibliometric data employed for constructing citation-based metrics were collected as of 2024-11-27.
Institutional positions in this ranking are determined by the aggregate of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) attributed to all ranking scholars affiliated with each university. The D-index is calculated exclusively based on publications and citation data within a specific area of study, ensuring discipline-specific accuracy. Notably, the evaluation encompasses scientists from all major research disciplines, capturing the full spectrum of research excellence present within each institution.
Scope of Research and Evaluation Criteria
The ranking is built on an extensive analysis of scientific research activity. Specifically, 279,971 scientist profiles were identified and examined, spanning all principal scientific disciplines. Each considered scientist met a minimum qualifying D-index threshold of 20, ensuring only consistently impactful scholars contributed to institutional outcomes. In addition to citation metrics, scientists’ awards and distinguished achievements within their fields also influenced the evaluation process, adding qualitative depth to the otherwise quantitative assessment.
Additional Verification and Assurance Practices
We recognize that raw bibliometric data alone should not serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output. Accordingly, all identified scientist profiles underwent meticulous manual verification and cross-correlation against publications indexed by a broad range of trustworthy and reputable sources. This step ensures accuracy, eliminates duplications, and enhances data reliability.
While the number of papers published in high-impact journals and respected conference proceedings does not affect ranking position directly, it provides important supplementary evidence of a researcher’s contribution to their field. The actual positions in the Research.com ranking are determined by each researcher’s H-index, with data gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most widely recognized and esteemed bibliometric databases in the academic community.
