The principal criterion for determining an institution’s position in the ranking is the aggregate of D-indexes (Discipline H-indexes) for all recognized scholars affiliated with that university. The D-index is distinguished by its focus on disciplinary boundaries—it exclusively considers publications and citation data within a specific academic discipline. Nevertheless, when generating the ranking, scholars spanning all major research areas and disciplines were taken into account, ensuring an inclusive and multidisciplinary perspective.
Scope of Research and Coverage
This edition of the ranking encompasses an extensive analysis, with 279,971 scientist profiles evaluated across a broad array of scientific fields. Profiles were identified from a variety of bibliometric data sources, illustrating a commitment to comprehensive coverage. Each scientist considered in the analysis met a minimum qualifying D-index threshold of 20, ensuring that only individuals with demonstrable and sustained research impact contributed to their institution’s standing. In addition to quantitative metrics, qualitative factors such as awards and achievements within a scientist’s field of study were included as supplementary indicators of scholarly excellence.
Verification and Quality Assurance
Recognizing the limitations of relying solely on raw bibliometric data for evaluating scholarly output, extensive verification measures were incorporated into the ranking process. Every scientist profile included in the analysis was subjected to manual verification and was cross-referenced against publications in a diverse range of reputable, peer-reviewed sources.
While the number of publications in leading journals and major conference proceedings is not a direct factor in determining a researcher’s position in the Research.com ranking, such achievements represent an important secondary indicator of a scientist's contribution to their field. The actual ranking positions are established based on each scholar’s H-index, as recorded in OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most respected and widely used bibliometric databases in the global research community.
