Data Sources and Ranking Methodology
The 3rd edition of Research.com’s Best Universities in Greece Ranking is built upon a foundation of extensive and robust bibliometric data. The primary data sources for this ranking are OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most prominent and widely acknowledged bibliometric databases in the research community, complemented by multiple other reputable data sources. The bibliometric data, essential for constructing the citation-based metrics underlying the ranking, were systematically collected as of November 27, 2024.
An institution’s position in the ranking is determined by the aggregate of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all ranking scholars affiliated with that university or research organization. The D-index considers exclusively publications and citation data pertaining to a specific discipline, ensuring a focused and relevant assessment. However, the selection of scientists for the ranking spans all major research areas, reflecting the comprehensive scope and interdisciplinary nature of research excellence.
Scope of Research Evaluated
To ensure a broad and inclusive assessment, researcher profiles from across the scientific landscape were examined. In this edition, 279,971 scientist profiles were identified and analyzed from a variety of authoritative bibliometric data sources, spanning all major scientific disciplines. Only scientists meeting a qualifying D-index threshold of 20 were included in the evaluation, ensuring that the ranking highlights those who have made substantial contributions within their fields. Additionally, scientists’ awards and achievements in their respective areas of study were considered as a supplementary indication of their academic excellence.
Verification and Quality Assurance Practices
Research.com recognizes that bibliometric data, while invaluable, should not be viewed as an absolute tool for evaluating scholarly contribution. To enhance credibility and accuracy, all scientist profiles included in the ranking underwent manual verification. This process involved cross-referencing each profile with publications drawn from a wide range of trustworthy sources to ensure precision and reliability.
While the quantity of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is not a formal factor in a scientist’s position in the Research.com ranking, it nonetheless serves as a significant secondary indicator of contribution within a particular scientific area. The final placement of scholars is established based on their H-index, as determined according to information gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef. These two databases are recognized as the most rigorous and comprehensive sources for bibliometric analysis currently available.
