Data Sources and Citation-Based Metrics
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Female Scientists in Belgium Ranking is based on comprehensive and reliable bibliometric data, with primary sources including OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other authoritative data repositories. The bibliometric data required for the citation-based metrics used in the ranking were systematically collected as of 2024-11-27. A scientist’s position in this ranking is determined predominantly by the researcher’s H-index, which serves as a rigorous and widely recognized indicator of both the productivity and citation impact of published work.
Scope of Research and Assessment Criteria
The scope of the ranking extends across all major scientific disciplines. In total, 279,971 scientist profiles were identified and analyzed from a wide array of bibliometric data sources. The qualifying H-index threshold was calibrated for each research area to ensure fair representation, typically set at either 30 or 40 depending on the discipline’s norms. In addition to quantitative bibliometric measures, the selection process also considered a scientist’s awards and achievements in their respective fields. It is important to highlight that only the top 1,000 female scientists in Belgium with the highest H-index are featured in this edition of the ranking.
Verification Practices and Data Integrity
The Research.com team recognizes the limitations inherent in using raw data as an absolute measure of a scholar’s impact. To ensure accuracy and integrity, all scientist profiles considered for the ranking were manually verified. The data were meticulously cross-referenced against publications from a broad range of trustworthy sources. While the quantity of papers published in respected journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s position in the ranking, it serves as a valuable additional signal of a scientist’s overall contributions to research in their specific domain. Ultimately, ranking positions are determined by a scientist’s H-index, as established by information sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef—the leading bibliometric databases recognized and trusted by the academic community. Our aim is to celebrate and bring attention to the accomplishments of female scholars, to inspire current and future women in academia, and to influence policymakers and academic leaders worldwide. Through this ranking, we hope to contribute meaningfully toward providing equitable opportunities and fostering increased representation for women in science.
