Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Female Scientists in Spain Ranking is primarily built upon comprehensive bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most prominent and widely recognized databases within the academic research community. Additionally, multiple other complementary data sources have been incorporated to ensure a robust and thorough dataset. The citation-based metrics used to determine the ranking positions were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s ranking position is fundamentally based on their H-index, a widely accepted and respected measure of both the productivity and citation impact of the published work of researchers.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
In the development of this ranking, a total of 279,971 scientist profiles were examined across all major scientific disciplines, leveraging bibliometric data from multiple credible sources. The qualifying H-index thresholds were tailored to each research area, typically set at 30 or 40, to account for disciplinary differences in publication and citation practices. Beyond bibliometric indices, additional consideration was given to each scientist’s awards and notable achievements within their field of study. Importantly, only the top 1,000 female scientists with the highest H-index scores were included in the final ranking, ensuring a focus on truly leading contributors to scientific advancement.
Verification Practices and Data Integrity
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data should never be treated as a sole or definitive measure of scholarly impact, our researchers undertook a meticulous process of manual verification for each scientist profile. This included cross-correlation of publication records against an array of trustworthy verification sources to affirm accuracy and authenticity. Although not a direct factor in determining a researcher’s position in the ranking, the volume of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings has been considered an important secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution within their scientific domain.
The final ranking positions are anchored to the H-index values derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef data, underscoring the credibility of the ranking’s methodological foundation. For detailed information about the methodology employed, please consult our methodology page.
