Data Sources and Ranking Methodology
The 3rd edition of the Research.com Best Universities in Italy Ranking is built upon a robust and transparent assessment of academic performance. The primary sources of data driving this ranking are OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most comprehensive bibliometric databases available to the global research community. In addition, multiple other data sources have been incorporated to enhance the accuracy and depth of the evaluation. The core bibliometric data used for devising the citation-based metrics underlying the ranking were collected as of 2024-11-27.
A university’s position in the ranking is determined by the sum of the D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all ranking scholars affiliated with the institution. The D-index for each scholar includes exclusively the publications and citation data relevant to an examined discipline. However, scholars across all major research areas were considered, ensuring a holistic and cross-disciplinary representation in the ranking.
Scope of Research and Scholar Evaluation
To form the foundation of this ranking, 279,971 scientist profiles were identified and examined from numerous bibliometric data sources, covering the entirety of major scientific disciplines. For inclusion in the evaluation, each scientist was required to meet a minimum D-index threshold of 20. This ensured that only scholars consistently contributing impactful research were taken into account. Additionally, scientists’ awards and achievements within their respective fields were also considered as factors in the assessment, reinforcing the comprehensiveness of the evaluation process.
Verification and Quality Assurance Practices
The team responsible for the Research.com ranking acknowledges that raw bibliometric data alone cannot provide a fully comprehensive evaluation of scholarly contributions. In recognition of this, all scientist profiles were manually verified and carefully cross-checked against publications listed in a wide range of reputable and trustworthy sources.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is not a factor influencing the Research.com ranking itself, it nonetheless serves as a valuable supplementary indicator of a scientist’s contributions in a particular scientific domain. Ultimately, each researcher's standing within this ranking is established using their H-index, as determined from the most up-to-date information gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef. These databases have established themselves as the most prominent and reliable bibliometric tools currently available to the research community.
