Data Sources and Ranking Metrics
The 3rd edition of the Research.com Best Universities in Spain Ranking is founded on comprehensive bibliometric data, with OpenAlex and CrossRef as the primary sources, complemented by a range of additional data providers. The citation-based metrics integral to this ranking are underpinned by bibliometric data collected as of 2024-11-27. The methodology centers on calculating the sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) for all ranking scholars affiliated with each institution. The D-index measures the research impact exclusively within an examined discipline based on publications and citation data, ensuring disciplinary specificity, yet scholars from all major research fields are included in the evaluation to ensure a holistic institutional ranking.
Scope of Research Considered
The ranking process involved the examination of 279,971 scientist profiles, identified from a wide array of bibliometric data sources, ensuring extensive coverage across all major scientific disciplines. To maintain a high standard of scholarly excellence, only scientists with a D-index of at least 20 were included. Moreover, the ranking also took into account scientists' awards and achievements in their respective fields, reflecting not only quantitative performance but also qualitative recognition in their disciplines.
Verification and Data Validation Practices
The creation of the ranking involved rigorous data validation procedures. The Research.com team recognizes that raw bibliometric data alone is not sufficient for a complete and valid assessment of a scholar’s contributions. Therefore, every scientist profile was subject to manual verification and cross-referenced against publications from a broad spectrum of trusted sources to ensure accuracy and reliability. While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not influence a researcher's rank in the Research.com system, it remains a valuable secondary indication of a scientist’s contribution within specific disciplines. The ultimate ranking positions are based on each researcher's H-index, as recorded in OpenAlex and CrossRef—databases renowned for their robustness and authority within the global research community.
