Scope of the Ranking
This ranking draws on a robust sample, examining 279,971 scientist profiles identified through a variety of bibliometric data sources, spanning all major scientific disciplines. The qualifying H-index thresholds were determined individually for each research area, typically set at levels of either 30 or 40, to ensure disciplines are properly represented according to their publication and citation norms.
In addition to the H-index, scientists' awards and notable achievements within their respective fields were also taken into account to recognize those whose research distinguishes them among their peers. Ultimately, only the top 1,000 scientists with the highest H-indexes were selected and are featured in this edition of the ranking, ensuring that it represents only the most influential rising stars in Japan’s scientific community.

To address this, every scientist profile included in the ranking underwent meticulous manual verification, with data cross-checked against a broad array of trustworthy sources. While position in the ranking is based solely on a researcher’s H-index—calculated from data curated in OpenAlex and CrossRef, the most authoritative bibliometric databases widely respected within the research community—the number of published papers in prominent journals and leading conference proceedings is acknowledged as an important, though secondary, measure of scientific contribution.
