Data Sources and Ranking Methodology
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Female Scientists in Portugal Ranking is grounded in comprehensive, high-quality data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, in conjunction with multiple other trusted bibliometric data sources. The bibliometric data underpinning the citation-based metrics employed in the ranking were collected as of 2024-11-27. The primary metric for determining a scientist’s position in the ranking is the researcher’s H-index, ensuring a well-established and widely recognized evaluation of research impact and productivity.
Scope of Research for the Ranking
The scope of this ranking is extensive, spanning all major scientific disciplines. Research.com examined 279,971 scientist profiles, identified from a broad spectrum of bibliometric data sources to ensure thorough coverage of the scientific landscape. The H-index qualification criteria were tailored for each research area, most commonly set at either 30 or 40, reflecting the varying academic standards across different fields. In addition to H-index, the evaluation considered each scientist’s distinctive awards and achievements within their field. Only the top 1,000 female scientists with the highest H-indexes have been included in the ranking, highlighting the leading figures in Portugal’s female scientific community.
Verification and Quality Assurance Practices
The team behind this ranking recognizes that raw bibliometric data, while valuable, is not an absolute tool for evaluating scholarly output. Accordingly, all scientist profiles underwent manual verification to confirm accuracy and reliability. Each profile was cross-referenced against publications in a wide array of reputable sources, ensuring only accurate and up-to-date information informed the ranking.
While the quantity of papers published in influential journals and at major conferences does not directly impact a researcher’s position, Research.com acknowledges it as an important secondary signal of a scientist’s contribution to their field. The definitive positions in the ranking are established strictly using each researcher’s H-index, leveraging data primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are widely regarded as the most prominent bibliometric resources in the scholarly community.
