Data Sources and Methodology
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Female Scientists in Finland Ranking is built on a robust foundation of data derived mainly from OpenAlex and CrossRef, in addition to several other reputable bibliometric sources. The comprehensive bibliometric data utilized to develop the citation-based metrics for this ranking were meticulously collected as of 2024-11-27. Central to the positioning of scientists within the ranking is each researcher's H-index, which serves as a key metric for evaluating scientific impact based on both productivity and citation quality.
Scope of Research
To ensure thoroughness and accuracy, the ranking process involved the examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across an expansive range of bibliometric databases, covering all major scientific disciplines. The qualifying H-index threshold was established distinctly for each field of research, typically set at either 30 or 40, to reflect the varying publication and citation norms across disciplines. Furthermore, notable awards and achievements in a scientist’s area of expertise were also considered during the evaluation process. Ultimately, the ranking highlights only the top 1,000 female scientists with the highest H-index values, recognizing them as leaders within the Finnish academic community.
Verification Practices
Recognizing the limitations of quantitative bibliometric data as the sole indicator of scientific achievement, the Research.com team employed extensive manual verification protocols. Each scientist’s profile was carefully reviewed and cross-validated against a broad spectrum of trustworthy publication sources. While the number of papers published in leading journals and conference proceedings is not a ranking criterion, it is acknowledged as a valuable secondary indicator of a researcher’s contributions within their field. Ultimately, a scientist’s position in the Research.com ranking is established based on their H-index, as computed from the curated data in OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are widely recognized as the most comprehensive and authoritative bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
