Data Sources and Collection for the 4th Edition Ranking
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Female Scientists in China Ranking is grounded in a robust and comprehensive data collection process. Primarily, the ranking utilizes bibliometric data extracted from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most prominent and widely respected scholarly databases globally. In addition to these principal sources, multiple other trusted data repositories were consulted to ensure the breadth and accuracy of our dataset.
The collection of bibliometric data, from which all citation-based metrics including each researcher’s H-index were derived, was performed on 2024-11-27. The ranking position for each scientist is therefore based on an analysis of their H-index as of this data collection date, reflecting their overall scientific impact and citation record.
Scope of the Research Considered
Our comprehensive evaluation began with an examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across a spectrum of major scientific disciplines using a variety of bibliometric data sources. To account for differences in publication and citation habits across fields, qualifying H-index thresholds for inclusion were determined separately for each research area; these thresholds were generally set at 30 or 40, depending on disciplinary standards.
In addition to quantitative metrics, the selection and ranking process also considered individual awards and achievements relevant to each scientist's field of study, acknowledging the wider scope of their scholarly influence. Ultimately, the current edition features the top 1000 female scientists in China, all of whom achieved the highest H-index values within their respective disciplines.
Verification Practices and Quality Assurance
Recognizing the inherent limitations of raw bibliometric data, the Research.com team implemented rigorous manual verification and cross-correlation practices. Every profile in the dataset was checked against publications from a diverse set of reputable sources, providing a reliable foundation for our rankings.
While a scientist’s H-index—gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef—determines her position, we also wish to emphasize that the number of papers in leading journals and conferences, while not a direct ranking factor, is an important secondary indicator of sustained research contribution within each field.
