Indiana University Indianapolis, commonly called IU Indianapolis or IU Indy, began operating under its current name on July 1, 2024. Its immediate predecessor was Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), established in 1969 by bringing together Indiana University and Purdue University programs in Indianapolis.
The 2024 change was more than a rebranding. Indiana University and Purdue University separated their IUPUI operations: IU Indianapolis became Indiana University's urban campus in the city, while Purdue established a separate Indianapolis presence. Some older admissions, graduation, earnings, and program records therefore describe students who attended IUPUI before the separation. Applicants considering a particular degree should check which university now awards it rather than assuming every former IUPUI program remains at IU Indianapolis.
The campus's longstanding connections to Indianapolis help explain its mix of undergraduate education, research, and professional study. Indiana University's medicine, dentistry, law, nursing, public health, and other programs have substantial operations in the city.
IU Indianapolis offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional education through a broad group of Indiana University schools. Its academic organization includes the School of Science, School of Liberal Arts, Herron School of Art and Design, Kelley School of Business Indianapolis, Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, and schools focused on education, nursing, public health, social work, and health and human sciences.
The Indianapolis campus is also associated with professional education through the IU School of Medicine, IU School of Dentistry, and IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law. These schools have different admissions processes from general undergraduate admission. Other distinctive areas of study include public and environmental affairs through the O'Neill School and philanthropy through the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.
Prospective students can explore subjects ranging from biology and computer science to business, visual art, public health, and social work. Because the former IU-Purdue partnership ended in 2024, the current IU Indianapolis catalog - not an older IUPUI program list - is the appropriate place to confirm a degree's name, awarding university, campus, and requirements.
IU Indianapolis is an urban campus in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. Its setting places classrooms, student services, and research facilities near hospitals, government offices, cultural institutions, and employers rather than on an isolated residential campus.
That location can make internships, clinical placements, and community-based coursework practical, although access depends on the program and the position. It also makes commuting an important consideration: about 85% of students are reported as commuters. Students comparing schedules should account for travel time, parking or transit costs, and whether classes or activities end after their usual transportation options are available. Indianapolis International Airport is the principal airport serving the city.
IU Indianapolis presents its purpose as combining accessible education, research, and public engagement in Indiana's capital city. Its stated priorities emphasize student opportunity and applying university expertise to problems affecting Indianapolis and the wider state.
That urban, public-university mission is reflected in the campus's mix of professional schools, health-related study, research, and partnerships beyond campus. These are institutional aims, not evidence that every student will obtain a research position, internship, or particular career outcome. IU Indianapolis is a public Indiana University campus, not a religiously affiliated institution.
