For the 2024-25 academic year, reported graduate tuition was the same for in-state and out-of-state students. The reported figures are tuition charges, not a complete estimate of the cost of attending.
A student's actual bill depends on the program, credit load and current charges. The per-credit price should not be added to the full-time annual tuition as though both apply to the same coursework. Books, technology, transportation and living expenses also affect a budget, and personal costs can differ markedly for students who already live and work in San Diego.
Graduate students exploring financing should check program eligibility for federal aid, complete the required aid application if applicable, and ask about institutional assistance, employer tuition benefits and eligible veteran or military education benefits. Loans must be repaid; published tuition is not the same as an individual's cost after assistance.
Because the graduate school is closely connected to educators' professional practice, many applicants may be considering study alongside employment in schools. That arrangement is different from a paid student job or Federal Work-Study award.
Federal Work-Study, when available to an eligible student, is a need-based aid program under which wages are earned through an approved job; it is not an automatic tuition discount. Applicants seeking paid work should ask the financial aid office whether their program participates, how eligibility is determined and where positions are posted. They should separately ask a program about internships, school-based projects and career support, including whether any placement is paid or required.
