Overview of Data Sources and Ranking Metrics
The 3rd edition of the Research.com Best Universities in Oman Ranking is founded upon an extensive and methodologically rigorous evaluation of bibliometric data. The primary sources used to compile the ranking are OpenAlex and CrossRef, along with several other reputable databases. The citation data central to our calculation of citation-based metrics were collected on 2024-11-27.
The ranking methodology assigns each university a score determined by the aggregated sum of the D-indexes (Discipline H-index) for all researchers affiliated with that institution. The D-index measures research performance within a specified discipline, using only discipline-specific publications and citation data. Importantly, our approach considered scientists from all major research areas during the construction of the ranking, ensuring broad and balanced representation across the scientific landscape.
Scope of Research Considered
To ensure comprehensive coverage and the highest standards of accuracy, the ranking is based on examination of 279,971 scientist profiles. These profiles were identified through aggregation and analysis of multiple bibliometric data sources, spanning all major scientific disciplines. For inclusion, each scientist was required to meet a minimum D-index threshold of 20. Furthermore, individual awards and achievements within a researcher’s field of study were also incorporated as a supplementary factor, alongside bibliometric indicators.
Verification Practices and Data Integrity
The Research.com team acknowledges that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the impact and quality of scholarly output. To address this, every scientist’s profile included in the ranking underwent manual verification, and all records were cross-referenced against publications catalogued by a broad array of trustworthy academic sources. While not factored directly into the ranking calculations, the total number of works published in leading journals and conference proceedings can provide valuable additional context regarding a researcher’s contributions to their field.
Institutional ranking positions are determined by calculating each scientist’s H-index, based specifically on data obtained from OpenAlex and CrossRef—the two most prominent sources for comprehensive research analytics available to the academic community.
