Data Sources and Methodology
The 3rd edition of the Research.com Best Universities in China Ranking was developed with the utmost commitment to accuracy and transparency. Primary bibliometric data sources included OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable scholarly data sources. The bibliometric data underlying the citation-based metrics were comprehensively collected on 2024-11-27.
The methodological foundation of the ranking relies on a meticulous summation of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) from all eligible scholars affiliated with each institution. The D-index is focused exclusively on publications and citation data relevant to a specified discipline, ensuring disciplinary rigor in the analysis. However, scholars from all major research domains—spanning natural sciences, engineering, medicine, and the social sciences—were considered in constructing the institutional rankings.
Scope of Research
The ranking is based on a comprehensive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from diverse and robust bibliometric data sources. These profiles span the full spectrum of scientific disciplines, which allows for a truly multidisciplinary perspective. To qualify for consideration, a scientist needed to have a D-index threshold of at least 20. In addition to bibliometric indicators, individual researcher awards and field-specific achievements were also assessed to incorporate qualitative excellence alongside quantitative performance.
Verification and Data Integrity
The Research.com team acknowledges that raw citations, while critical, are not a definitive measure of scholarly accomplishment. Consequently, every scientist profile included in the ranking underwent manual verification and was cross-correlated against publications in a wide range of highly trustworthy and recognized sources.
While the primary metric for a researcher's position in the Research.com ranking remains their H-index as sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef — presently the most prominent and respected bibliometric databases available to the global research community — the number of publications in leading journals and at top conferences serves as an additional, though non-determinative, indicator of scientific influence. This holistic process assures the academic community of the integrity and reliability of the ranking outcomes.
