Commencement and scheduled academic gatherings are the Fielding events most directly connected to its graduate-student experience. They give students who often study at a distance opportunities to meet peers and faculty in person, present work, and mark the completion of a degree.
Program meetings may also include workshops, research discussions, or professional-development activities. Their schedule, location, and attendance rules can change, and some are academic requirements rather than optional celebrations. Applicants should distinguish a recurring university event from a required residency when estimating travel time and cost.
Fielding should not be approached as a conventional residential college with an assumed dormitory placement and meal plan. Most students need to arrange housing and meals where they ordinarily live and, separately, for any required in-person sessions.
Before accepting an offer, an applicant who must travel should check the meeting dates and locations and ask whether the program arranges lodging or group rates. Budget for the full trip, including local transportation and meals, rather than treating tuition as the entire cost of participation. Temporary accommodation for a session is not the same as university-provided housing for an academic year.
