EVMS is not an independent varsity-athletics campus. Its students should not expect an EVMS NCAA team, athletic recruiting program or athletic scholarship pathway simply because the medical school is part of ODU.
ODU competes in NCAA Division I athletics, primarily in the Sun Belt Conference, but university varsity competition is different from student recreation. EVMS students interested in fitness, intramural activities or club sports should check the current ODU eligibility and facility-access rules for their program and campus. Clinical and class schedules may also affect whether a recreational activity is practical.
EVMS student involvement is oriented toward health professions, service and peer leadership. Medical students can participate in class leadership and interest groups focused on specialties and professional issues, while other programs have organizations shaped by their respective fields.
Prospective students may encounter groups connected with community health outreach, research, professional identity and shared cultural or religious interests. Recognition and active membership can change from year to year, so a current student-organization directory is more reliable than an older list of club names. A useful question for applicants is whether an organization is open to their specific program: an M.D. interest group and an ODU-wide club may have different participation rules.
EVMS primarily serves students preparing for medical and other health professions careers, rather than a population of first-time undergraduates. Reported first-time and transfer-in degree-seeking undergraduate enrollment at the former EVMS institution was zero for 2024-25; that does not describe enrollment across ODU after the institutions combined.
Students in the EVMS setting may be pursuing the M.D. or another graduate or professional credential, and their schedules vary by program and stage of training. Because the 2024 integration changed institutional reporting boundaries, an ODU-wide headcount would not tell an applicant how many students are in an individual EVMS cohort. Program-level class profiles are the better source for cohort size and composition.
Daily life for an EVMS student is shaped more by classes, laboratories, clinical training and professional preparation than by the residential rhythms of a traditional undergraduate campus. Students may spend time across the medical district and affiliated care sites rather than in one academic building.
Orientation, peer connections, service activities and student support can help students navigate a demanding curriculum. The practical experience will differ between a first-year medical student, a student on clinical rotations and a student in another health professions program. Applicants should check where their program's teaching occurs and how its schedule affects access to ODU-wide activities, wellness resources and campus facilities.
The principal medical-library resource associated with EVMS is the Edward E. Brickell Medical Sciences Library in Norfolk. Students should not infer the absence of library services from a campus-library count recorded before or during the institutional integration.
Medical-library resources are particularly useful for searching clinical and biomedical literature, finding journals and working with research information. Students can also seek help with locating sources and navigating available electronic collections. Since EVMS is now part of ODU, access to particular library systems, study spaces and remote resources may depend on a student's university credentials and program; current library policies should resolve those practical questions.
