The familiar four-year and six-year undergraduate graduation rates are not useful measures of EVMS's M.D. program. Those federal measures generally follow first-time, full-time undergraduates seeking a bachelor's degree, while EVMS's principal medical and health professions programs enroll students at the graduate or professional level.
For a more relevant comparison, an applicant can ask a specific program for its entering-cohort completion figures and the period over which they are measured. Medical applicants may also examine published residency placement information, while applicants to a licensed profession may examine the program's applicable examination outcomes. Completion, residency placement and licensure are different measures; none alone describes every student's experience.
A single institution-wide earnings figure would be a poor guide to EVMS outcomes. Its programs prepare students for different professions, and a physician's income may change substantially between residency and later practice.
When comparing earnings claims, applicants should identify whether a figure describes a median or an average, which graduates are included, and how long after completion earnings were measured. Federal earnings measures can omit some graduates and may combine students who follow different paths. Specialty, further training, geography, hours worked and educational debt also affect the value of a salary comparison.
Career preparation at EVMS is closely tied to program-specific advising, clinical training and, for medical students, the residency application process. Students seeking conventional job-search assistance should ask their program what it offers in areas such as résumé or CV review, interviewing and employer connections; those services are distinct from verified employment outcomes.
