University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) began in 1947 as the University of Maryland's College of Special and Continuation Studies. Its original purpose was to make university courses accessible to adults whose work and other responsibilities made conventional daytime study difficult.
The institution later became University of Maryland University College and expanded its teaching to U.S. military communities overseas. In 2019, it adopted the name University of Maryland Global Campus. The name change did not make it a branch of the similarly named University of Maryland, College Park: UMGC is a separate public university within the University System of Maryland. Its history helps explain its emphasis on online courses, transfer credit, and programs for working adults and military-connected students.
UMGC organizes its academic programs through the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, and the School of Cybersecurity and Information Technology. It offers associate and bachelor's degrees, graduate degrees, and certificates, with most students studying online.
Undergraduate examples include business administration, accounting, computer science, cybersecurity, criminal justice, psychology, and communication studies. Graduate offerings extend into areas such as management, information technology, and health care administration. Applicants should use the current academic catalog to check a particular program's required courses, prerequisites, and delivery format; the availability of a subject does not mean every course is offered in every term or location.
UMGC reports 167 full-time and 3,793 part-time faculty members across undergraduate and graduate teaching. That staffing pattern is relevant to students who want to know how instruction is organized, but the totals alone do not describe an individual instructor's availability or qualifications.
UMGC is based in Adelphi, Maryland, in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Its Adelphi address identifies the university's administrative home, not a conventional residential campus where most students attend classes each day.
The university serves students online and through selected locations in the United States and overseas, including locations associated with military communities. An applicant considering in-person instruction should check the location of each required course rather than assume it will be available in Adelphi. For students visiting the Washington-area offices, regional transit and traffic matter more than campus commuting patterns; Reagan National Airport is one of the area's airports, though the most convenient airport depends on the traveler's route.
UMGC states that its mission centers on providing accessible, affordable education to working adults and military-connected learners. Its educational approach emphasizes flexible study and the application of academic learning to professional and personal goals.
That stated purpose is reflected in online delivery, multiple enrollment periods, and policies that can recognize eligible prior college work and other assessed learning. These are institutional priorities, not evidence that every program will fit every work schedule or accept every form of prior learning. Prospective students should compare the course schedule and degree requirements with the time they can realistically devote to study. UMGC is a public university and has no religious affiliation.
