The cost of attendance depends heavily on the credential. In IPEDS figures for 2024-25, reported full-time undergraduate tuition was $11,385, with $3,366 in required fees, for $14,751 before living and other expenses. The same reporting set listed full-time graduate tuition of $41,580 and required graduate fees of $1,430, totaling $43,010. In-state and out-of-state figures were the same within each of those categories.
These broad institutional categories should not be used as a current MD tuition quote. A medical student's published budget may have different tuition, fees, equipment and examination costs. Before comparing offers, obtain the current cost-of-attendance schedule for the exact program and academic year. Add the budgeted housing and food, books and supplies, transportation, health insurance where applicable, and personal expenses only once; tuition alone is not the full annual cost.
Aid changes what a student pays, but a loan reduces the amount due now rather than the eventual cost of education. In 2024-25 aid reporting, 75% of students in the reported aid population received financial aid, while 54% received student loans. Those institution-level percentages do not predict an individual MD applicant's award. Eligible students may have access to federal loans, program-specific scholarships and military or veterans' benefits. The school's Abigail Geisinger Scholars program is a particularly important option to examine for applicants interested in its designated career paths, because its funding comes with a service commitment whose current terms should be read carefully.
Student employment is possible to investigate at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, but applicants should not build a medical-school budget around an assumed work-study award or a fixed number of paid hours. Eligibility for Federal Work-Study, if offered for a student's program, is determined through financial aid and differs from eligibility to apply for an ordinary part-time job.
Research assistantships, health-system positions and other paid roles can have separate hiring processes and may not qualify as Federal Work-Study. MD students also need to consider whether a job's schedule is compatible with required classes and clinical rotations. The financial aid office can identify aid-based employment options, while the relevant hiring office can explain a position's duties, pay and eligibility; neither a potential job nor an internship should be counted as assured income.
