Why Colorado Technical University Is a Great Choice for Online Degree Programs in 2026
The rise of online schools has changed modern education. What was once considered an alternative pathway has now become a preferred option for most working professionals, military learners, career changers, and adult students seeking a more flexible approach towards learning.
In 2026, online education is no longer simply about convenience; it is about access to high-quality programs that align with real-world career goals and accommodate the demands of modern life. Ultimately, it's about choosing programs that help students work to develop skills that may align with current employer needs.
Leading the charge in the evolution of learning is Colorado Technical University.
Founded in 1965 in Colorado Springs, Colorado Technical University (CTU) has spent decades evolving alongside the needs of students and industries. Originally established as a technical training school, the institution expanded over time into an accredited university offering undergraduate and graduate programs across business, healthcare, and technology.
CTU’s commitment to innovation became even more evident in 1995, when it launched its online school. This move enabled the university to bring career-focused education beyond traditional classrooms and into homes across the United States and around the world.

A Military-Centric College
CTU has long placed military learners at the center of its mission. Founded by Air Force Lt. Col. Robert (Bob) Turkisher, the university was originally built with a clear purpose: to help service members and veterans transition more smoothly into civilian life through education.
That foundation still shapes CTU today. The university understands the realities of military service: deployments, relocations, and unpredictable schedules — and has built its online learning model to accommodate those demands. For many service members, flexibility is not just a convenience; it determines whether pursuing a degree is possible at all.
Through its online-first approach, CTU allows students to access coursework anytime and from anywhere with an internet connection. This structure can help military learners stay on track academically while balancing service obligations and personal responsibilities.
Furthermore, CTU also accepts and provides several forms of support designed to reduce financial and academic barriers for service members, veterans, and military families:
- Veterans Affairs (VA) Benefits: Eligible service members, veterans, and spouses may use a range of VA education benefits that can help offset the cost of earning a degree, making higher education more financially manageable.
- Military Tuition Rates: Active-duty personnel, Reserve members, National Guard members, and qualifying spouses may be eligible for reduced tuition rates at CTU, helping lower out-of-pocket expenses.
- Grants and Scholarships: CTU offers military-focused grants and scholarships that do not require repayment, providing additional financial support to eligible service members, veterans, and their families.
- Transfer and Service Credit: Military training, coursework, and service experience may qualify for transfer credit, potentially allowing students to shorten their time to graduation while reducing overall tuition costs.*
*Transfer credit is evaluated on an individual basis. Not all credits are eligible for transfer. See the University Catalog for transfer credit policies.
Pursuing Your Degree Efficiently with CTU Fast Track™
CTU Fast Track™ is a prior learning program that helps students move through their degree more efficiently by earning credit for what they already know. For many learners, this means saving both time and tuition while progressing toward graduation at an accelerated pace.
At Colorado Technical University, the Fast Track program recognizes that students often bring valuable experience from work, military service, trade training, apprenticeships, or other real-world learning. Instead of repeating material they already understand, students can demonstrate competency through targeted exams designed around core course objectives.
Here’s how it works:
- Register for your exam: Sign up through an advisor or success coach before your course starts. You can register for multiple exams, but it’s recommended to keep it to about two per week. Confirmation is sent via email.
- Take the exam: Log in when the exam opens and complete it within the window. Most exams take 3–5 hours and can be paused and resumed as needed. No penalty for not passing, but retakes aren’t allowed.
- Pass and move ahead: Score 70% (undergrad) or 80% (graduate) to earn credit for the course. If not passed, you stay enrolled as planned. Credits are applied shortly after the exam window closes.
The ability to reduce time in school and/or reduce tuition towards the full cost of a degree program depends on the number of CTU Fast TrackTM exams successfully passed. Fast Track program credits are non-transferable. Not all programs are eligible for possible reduction in time and money. Courses eligible are subject to change. Students should not rely on potential Fast Track savings or eligibility when making an enrollment decision.
