What is the history of University of North Texas?

The University of North Texas (UNT) began in Denton in 1890 as the Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute. Its original purpose was to prepare teachers, but it grew into a public university with programs across the arts, sciences, business, engineering and other fields.

Joshua C. Chilton founded the school, which became state-supported in 1901. Later names included North Texas State Teachers College, North Texas State College and North Texas State University. It adopted the University of North Texas name in 1988. Its College of Music has been part of that expansion: UNT established a jazz studies degree program in 1947, an early development in university-level jazz education.

Today, UNT is the Denton-based university within the University of North Texas System. Applicants should not confuse it with the separately organized University of North Texas at Dallas or the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth.
