Homecoming and THON are two of Penn State University Park's best-documented recurring traditions. Homecoming brings students, alumni, and the surrounding community together through activities associated with the fall celebration and football weekend.
THON - the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon - is a student-run fundraising effort benefiting Four Diamonds and families affected by childhood cancer. Its year-round work culminates in a dance-marathon event. Students can participate through organizations, committees, and fundraising activities, not just by attending the final event.
Family-focused weekends give relatives scheduled opportunities to visit campus and learn more about student life. Dates, names, and activities can change by year, so visitors should rely on the current university events calendar rather than assume that a past schedule still applies.
University Park offers university-operated residence halls and other on-campus housing, along with meal-plan options. First-year University Park students are generally expected to live on campus unless they qualify for an applicable exception; admission to a different Penn State campus can carry different housing rules.
University Park residence areas include traditional and renovated halls, while some upper-level students may seek apartment-style university housing or private rentals in State College. Space, eligibility, and application timing differ by option. Students should read the housing contract before accepting it, particularly its term, cancellation provisions, and meal-plan requirements. On-campus dining includes dining commons and other food locations, but a meal plan's value and accepted locations depend on the plan selected.
About 35% of students were reported as living on campus, a reminder that off-campus housing is a substantial part of the local market. Renters should compare the full lease period, utilities, transit, and distance to classes - not just a monthly advertised price. Penn State's off-campus housing resources can help students understand the search process, though a privately signed lease remains the student's responsibility.
