The familiar four-year and six-year undergraduate graduation-rate measures are a poor standalone way to assess LECOM. They track specified cohorts of first-time undergraduates, while much of LECOM's education takes place in graduate and professional programs with different entry points and timelines.
A prospective DO, PharmD, or DMD student will get a more relevant picture by asking for the intended program's cohort completion rate and the period used to calculate it. Other useful measures differ by profession: medical applicants may examine residency-placement information and licensing-examination results, while pharmacy and dental applicants may examine the applicable board-examination outcomes. Each measure answers a different question. For example, a residency-placement figure is not a graduation rate, and an examination pass rate may exclude students who did not reach the examination stage.
There is no single earnings figure that describes the likely financial outcome of every LECOM degree. Physicians, pharmacists, dentists, and graduates of other health programs enter different labor markets, and their income can vary with specialty, location, employment setting, and experience.
Timing is especially important when comparing outcomes. A newly graduated physician may enter paid residency training before independent practice, so an earnings measure taken soon after graduation would not represent the same career stage as an established physician's income. Likewise, a national occupational wage figure is not a measure of LECOM alumni earnings. Applicants weighing cost against potential income should compare program-specific outcomes where available and account for time in training, debt, and the possibility that career plans will change.
