A standard four- or six-year freshman graduation rate is not a useful measure of UT Southwestern's principal programs. Its students primarily enter graduate and professional pathways, whose expected lengths and completion measures differ from those of bachelor's degrees.
For example, an MD, a research doctorate, and a health professions degree follow different curricula and timelines. Applicants evaluating completion outcomes should look for the measure published by the specific program, including the entering cohort, the time allowed to finish, and whether leaves of absence are included. Professional programs may also publish licensing-examination outcomes, which answer a different question from graduation rates.
There is no single earnings figure that responsibly describes outcomes for all UT Southwestern students. Future income can vary sharply among physicians, researchers, public health graduates, and other health professionals - and by specialty, location, further training, and years in practice.
When comparing published salary figures, applicants should check whether they describe a median or an average, how long after graduation earnings were measured, and whose earnings were included. An MD graduate entering residency, for instance, is at a different career stage from an established physician. Career planning is best done through the relevant program's advising, clinical mentors, and professional networks; employment or salary statistics should not be read as a promise to an individual student.
