UMass Chan Medical School is institutionally accredited by the New England Commission on Higher Education, or NECHE. Institutional accreditation applies to the school as a whole and is distinct from accreditation of an individual professional program.
The Doctor of Medicine program is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the specialized accreditor for MD programs in the United States. Nursing applicants should also check the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing's current program-specific accreditation disclosures for their intended credential. Research doctorates do not necessarily have a separate professional accreditor.
Accreditation is relevant to federal financial aid and, for professional programs, can be part of the path toward licensure or further training. It does not by itself guarantee that another institution will accept transferred credit or that a graduate will qualify for a license: states and professional boards impose additional requirements.
Admission to UMass Chan is program-specific and selective. The school primarily admits applicants to graduate and professional programs, so a high school student seeking a first bachelor's degree would generally need to complete undergraduate study elsewhere before applying to an appropriate pathway.
MD applicants use the American Medical College Application Service, or AMCAS, and eligible applicants may be asked to complete a school-specific secondary application. The process also involves college transcripts, an MCAT score, recommendations, and an interview for applicants invited to one. Applicants should review the medical school's current academic preparation and residency policies rather than assume that admission follows a conventional freshman GPA, SAT, or ACT formula.
Biomedical sciences and nursing applicants follow their own programs' application instructions. Depending on the degree, requirements can include a prior bachelor's degree, transcripts, recommendations, a statement of purpose, research experience, or a nursing license. A graduate-entry nursing pathway designed for someone changing careers should not be confused with an advanced-practice pathway for an existing registered nurse. International applicants should check the relevant program's English-proficiency and credential-evaluation rules. Deadlines and interview procedures vary by program and entry year.
Application charges at UMass Chan depend on the program and application route; there is no single undergraduate application fee that describes this graduate institution. MD applicants should distinguish the AMCAS processing charge from any separate UMass Chan secondary-application charge.
The Association of American Medical Colleges' Fee Assistance Program can reduce eligible applicants' AMCAS costs and may affect participating schools' secondary fees. Other graduate programs set their own application and waiver procedures. Applicants who need a waiver should check both the application service and the receiving program before submitting payment; a waiver for one charge does not automatically waive another, and application fees are different from tuition or an enrollment deposit.
UMass Chan does not present Army, Air Force, or Navy ROTC as a standard campus program. ROTC is generally structured around undergraduate officer training, so applicants should not assume that enrollment at this graduate medical school provides access to a unit at another UMass campus.
Students interested in military service have other, distinct questions to investigate, including eligibility for military health-professions scholarships or education benefits. Such programs can carry service obligations and have their own application processes. A prospective student should obtain written confirmation of any cross-enrollment arrangement before treating ROTC participation as part of a UMass Chan plan.
UMass Chan is not a conventional destination for students transferring into a bachelor's degree. Its undergraduate transfer-in enrollment was zero in the 2024-25 IPEDS reporting period; that figure does not establish whether an individual graduate program might accept prior coursework.
Applicants who began an MD, nursing, or graduate research program elsewhere should ask the receiving program whether it considers transfers at all. Admission, permission to enter at an advanced stage, and acceptance of particular credits are separate decisions. Professional programs may need to assess course content, clinical hours, accreditation, and the sequence of training before making one.
The practical next step is to request the intended program's transfer or advanced-standing policy and an official evaluation of transcripts and syllabi. Applicants should not assume that general acceptance of coursework at another accredited institution will shorten a medical or nursing program.
International experience at UMass Chan is more likely to take the form of approved global health, research, or clinical activities than a conventional semester abroad built around undergraduate electives. Availability depends on the degree program and the opportunities offered in a given year.
A student considering an international placement should ask the program how it approves a site, awards academic credit, arranges supervision, and handles travel safety and professional liability. Clinical work abroad can be particularly restricted by a student's level of training and the rules at the host site. Financial support for travel should be confirmed separately rather than assumed to be included in ordinary tuition or aid.
