University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School is a public graduate health sciences institution in Worcester, Massachusetts. The state established it in 1962 to expand medical education and strengthen the physician workforce; its first medical students enrolled in 1970.
The institution subsequently developed graduate programs in biomedical sciences and nursing alongside its medical degree. Its name changed from the University of Massachusetts Medical School to UMass Chan Medical School in 2021, following a gift from the Chan family. Today, the three schools bear the names T.H. Chan School of Medicine, Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing. The name change did not turn it into an undergraduate college: its academic focus remains graduate and professional education.
UMass Chan is organized into three schools: the T.H. Chan School of Medicine, the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing. Applicants apply to a particular program, not to a general undergraduate faculty.
The medical school offers the Doctor of Medicine and combines classroom learning with clinical training. Its educational opportunities include the Population-based Urban and Rural Community Health, or PURCH, track, which involves training in western Massachusetts. The biomedical sciences school offers research-focused doctoral and other graduate programs. The nursing school offers graduate-entry and advanced nursing pathways, including doctoral study; a pathway intended for people without prior nursing preparation has different entry requirements from one designed for licensed nurses.
These distinctions matter when comparing programs. An MD applicant should examine clinical training and residency preparation, a prospective biomedical scientist should examine research areas and potential mentors, and a nursing applicant should check the credential and licensure eligibility attached to the specific pathway.
UMass Chan's main campus is at 55 Lake Avenue North in Worcester, Massachusetts, alongside UMass Memorial Medical Center's University Campus. Its setting places medical and nursing students near clinical facilities and researchers near laboratories, but it is not a traditional residential undergraduate campus.
Worcester is in central Massachusetts. Worcester Union Station has regional rail service, while local bus routes serve parts of the city; the usefulness of either option depends on a student's class, laboratory, or clinical schedule. Clinical placements and some educational activities can take place away from the main campus, including in western Massachusetts. Applicants should check where their particular program requires them to travel before choosing housing or deciding whether they need a car.
UMass Chan states that its purpose is to advance health and wellness through education, research, health care, and public service. That mission reflects the institution's combined role as a professional school, biomedical research center, and partner in clinical care.
Its educational emphasis is on preparing physicians, scientists, and nurses rather than offering a broad undergraduate curriculum. The school also describes service to Massachusetts communities and attention to health needs as institutional priorities. Those are stated goals; applicants can assess how a particular program puts them into practice by examining its curriculum, clinical sites, research supervision, and community-based work.
