The College of Staten Island (CSI) is a public college in the City University of New York (CUNY) system. It was established in 1976 through the merger of Staten Island Community College and Richmond College, bringing two-year and four-year education together in one institution.
CSI moved to its present Willowbrook campus in 1993. The site had previously housed the Willowbrook State School, an institution whose documented mistreatment of residents became part of the history of disability rights in the United States. That history is significant to the site and should not be confused with the college's own founding. Today, CSI offers associate, bachelor's and graduate study on a single main campus.
CSI offers programs across the liberal arts, sciences, business, education, engineering and health professions. Its academic organization includes the School of Business, School of Education and School of Health Sciences, alongside divisions covering humanities, social sciences, science and technology.
Students can explore fields such as accounting, computer science, electrical engineering, English, psychology, social work and nursing. The availability of both associate and bachelor's degrees can be useful to students planning a staged path through college, but admission to CSI does not necessarily mean admission to a selective major. Nursing, education and other professionally oriented programs may have separate prerequisites, progression standards or clinical requirements.
CSI also offers graduate programs. Applicants comparing programs should use the current CUNY catalog to check the credential, required courses and whether a program is offered primarily in person, online or through a combination of formats.
CSI's main campus is at 2800 Victory Boulevard in Staten Island, New York. Its large Willowbrook site has a different feel from a compact Manhattan campus, while remaining part of New York City's public university system.
Commuting deserves particular attention. Staten Island has no subway connection to the other boroughs, so students traveling from elsewhere in the city may combine a ferry, bus or other transit service; drivers should account for traffic and parking rules. CSI publishes campus transportation and parking information, including bus connections and shuttle arrangements, which students should check against their intended class times. The distance between buildings also matters when planning back-to-back classes.
CSI describes its mission in terms of accessible public higher education, learning, research and service to Staten Island and the wider region. As a CUNY college, it serves students pursuing entry to college, degree completion, professional preparation and advanced study.
Its educational aims encompass both liberal learning and preparation for work or further education. Those are institutional priorities, not guarantees of any particular student outcome. CSI is a public institution, not a religiously affiliated college.
