California Northstate University is institutionally accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). Institutional accreditation applies to the university as a whole; it is different from the approval or accreditation that may be required for a particular professional program.
Pharmacy, medicine and dentistry each have their own professional accrediting systems. Students considering one of these degrees should check the current listing for the specific program with its relevant accreditor and, separately, the licensing rules of the state where they hope to practice. A university's institutional accreditation alone does not establish eligibility for every professional license.
Institutional accreditation is also relevant to eligibility for federal student aid. It does not, by itself, ensure that another college will accept transfer credits: the receiving institution decides how prior coursework applies to its degree requirements.
Undergraduate admission to CNU is not open admission. For the undergraduate reporting category in 2024-25, secondary-school GPA was required, while SAT and ACT scores were listed as neither required nor recommended. The same reporting indicated a TOEFL requirement for applicants to whom that English-proficiency policy applies.
Applicants should distinguish those undergraduate indicators from the requirements of individual professional colleges. Medical, dental, pharmacy and graduate programs may use their own application systems and require college transcripts, prerequisite courses, examinations, essays, references or interviews. A prospective student should follow the current checklist and deadline for the exact degree sought rather than use undergraduate requirements as a substitute.
In a reported first-time undergraduate admissions cycle, CNU admitted 86 of 93 applicants, an acceptance rate of about 92%. Only five admitted applicants enrolled. Because that entering group was small, the rate is not a useful prediction of an individual applicant's chances in a professional program.
CNU reported a $100 application fee for its undergraduate admissions category in 2024-25. That figure should not be assumed to cover applications to its medical, dental, pharmacy or other graduate programs, which may use different processes and charges.
An application fee pays for review of an application; it is not an enrollment deposit or a tuition payment. Before submitting, applicants should check the fee displayed by their program's application system and ask its admissions office whether a waiver is available and must be approved before payment. Fee-waiver rules can differ by program and application service.
CNU is not identified as operating an ROTC unit on its campus. Applicants interested in Army, Air Force or Navy ROTC should not assume that enrollment at CNU provides access to a host institution's battalion or detachment.
Cross-enrollment, when permitted, depends on an agreement with the ROTC host and on the student's degree program and schedule. A prospective participant should seek confirmation from both the appropriate ROTC host and CNU before relying on ROTC for a scholarship or commissioning plan. ROTC scholarships have separate selection criteria and may carry a military service obligation.
Transfer applicants need a program-specific review at CNU. Admission as a transfer student and acceptance of previously earned credits are separate decisions: even an admitted applicant may find that some courses do not satisfy the chosen degree's requirements.
Applicants should be prepared to submit official transcripts from every college attended and request an evaluation of how prior coursework would apply. For health-professions pathways, course content, laboratory work, grades and the age of prerequisite coursework can be especially consequential. Written confirmation of accepted credits and remaining requirements is more useful for planning than a general assurance that credits are transferable.
The reported 2024-25 first-time undergraduate data recorded no transfer-in degree- or certificate-seeking students. That observation describes one reporting period; it does not establish a permanent prohibition on transfer admission.
A conventional semester- or year-long study-abroad pathway is not a defining feature of CNU's documented health-professions programs. Students should not assume that an overseas course or clinical experience will automatically count toward a tightly sequenced degree.
Anyone considering an international course, research opportunity or placement should obtain advance approval from the relevant college. The questions to settle in writing are whether the activity meets degree and clinical-training rules, how credit will be recorded, and whether financial aid can apply. Clinical experiences abroad may also be subject to professional, supervision and safety requirements distinct from those for classroom study.
