The undergraduate four-year and six-year graduation-rate measures commonly used to compare colleges do not describe the AFI Conservatory's two-year graduate program. In 2024-25, its reported count of first-time, degree- or certificate-seeking undergraduates was zero.
For a prospective Fellow, more useful completion questions concern the share of an entering Conservatory cohort that finishes its program, the usual time needed to complete thesis work and the circumstances under which additional enrollment is required. Those questions should be answered using graduate-program definitions: an undergraduate cohort rate cannot be converted into an MFA completion rate.
There is no single salary figure that responsibly describes the earning prospects of all AFI Conservatory Fellows. Cinematographers, editors, producers, designers, directors and writers enter different labor markets, and filmmaking income can vary sharply with contracts, project availability and experience.
When comparing any graduate earnings statistic, applicants should check whether it reports a median or an average, how long after completion earnings were measured and which graduates were included. A figure limited to people with matched employment records, for example, is not a count of everyone who found work. Salary claims also should not be mistaken for evidence that the Conservatory places graduates in jobs.
