Screenings are a recurring part of AFI Conservatory life: Fellows present and discuss films made during the program, including thesis work. These events give collaborators a chance to see completed projects and engage with an audience outside their immediate production team.
The Conservatory's commencement marks the completion of that work. The wider American Film Institute also organizes film events, including AFI FEST, but applicants should distinguish an institute-wide festival from a guaranteed place for a Fellow's film in its program. Selection for an external or AFI-organized screening is a separate process.
AFI Conservatory applicants should plan for independent housing and meals in Los Angeles rather than build a budget around a standard undergraduate residence hall and dining plan. A prospective Fellow should verify any current housing assistance with the Conservatory before signing a lease or assuming that a room is reserved.
For off-campus housing, the practical comparison is not rent alone. Lease length, deposits, utilities, parking and travel time to the North Western Avenue campus can materially change the cost of attending. Fellows planning for early calls or late production work should also consider how they would get home when their usual transit option is unavailable.
