The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary holds institutional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, commonly called SACSCOC. It also holds theological accreditation through the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools.
These are different forms of review: SACSCOC accredits the institution, while Association of Theological Schools accreditation addresses theological education within its scope. Accreditation is relevant to academic recognition and may affect eligibility for aid programs, but it does not guarantee that another college will accept a particular course in transfer. Likewise, applicants pursuing a licensed profession, such as teaching or counseling, must check the requirements of the state and credential they intend to pursue; accreditation alone does not establish licensure eligibility.
Admission requirements depend on whether an applicant seeks an undergraduate place at Boyce College or a graduate place at the seminary. Undergraduate applicants should expect to submit an application, a secondary-school record showing completion of high school or an accepted equivalent, and other materials required for their applicant category. Graduate applicants should follow the requirements for their specific degree.
In the 2024-25 admissions reporting, secondary-school GPA, school records, recommendations, and admission test scores were listed as required for first-time undergraduate applicants; school rank was not. Among enrolled first-time students who submitted scores, the reported median was 1145 on the SAT and 23 on the ACT. Those figures describe enrolled students, not minimum qualifying scores. Applicants should check the current Boyce application for the operative testing policy rather than assume an earlier reporting-year rule remains in force.
Admissions reporting recorded 605 first-time applicants and 338 offers of admission, an acceptance rate of about 56%. This is an institution-level historical measure, not a prediction of an individual's chances. International applicants should review current English-proficiency and academic-record requirements; theological graduate programs may also request materials addressing academic preparation and ministry goals.
The reported application fee is $40. Because an application fee is set through the current admissions process, applicants should confirm the amount displayed for their particular undergraduate, graduate, or other application before paying.
An application fee is separate from tuition, housing charges, and any deposit due after admission. Applicants who need a waiver should ask the relevant admissions office about eligibility and the request process before submitting payment; they should not assume that a waiver available for one applicant category applies to another.
Prospective students should not assume that an Army, Air Force, or Navy ROTC unit operates on the seminary campus. Anyone interested in ROTC should first establish whether a Louisville-area host program currently permits cross-enrollment by students in their specific Boyce or seminary degree.
ROTC participation is not the same as ordinary course registration. Host-program approval, citizenship and medical standards, training commitments, scholarship rules, and a potential military service obligation may apply. A student considering this route should obtain confirmation from both the proposed ROTC host and the seminary before treating ROTC courses as part of a degree plan.
Transfer applicants should apply through the process for their intended Boyce College or seminary program and submit official records of prior college work. Admission to a program and acceptance of particular transfer courses are separate decisions.
Transfer applicants have been reported as eligible to enter in fall, winter, spring, or summer, but available starts can depend on the program and course sequence. Before enrolling, request a written evaluation showing which courses satisfy degree requirements, which count only as electives, and how many credits must be completed at the seminary. This is especially important for theology, ministry, and professional programs whose course content or accreditation requirements may differ from those at a previous institution. Applicants with advanced placement credit should also verify how it applies to their intended degree.
International study should be evaluated at the level of the specific degree program. A ministry trip, an overseas course, and a semester of study abroad are different experiences and do not necessarily carry the same academic credit.
Before committing to an overseas opportunity, students should ask the relevant academic office whether it is institution-operated or offered by a partner, whether it fulfills a degree requirement, and who approves the credit. They should also check the full travel cost, insurance and safety requirements, and whether their particular scholarship or other aid can be used. Students on tightly sequenced undergraduate or graduate programs should determine whether time abroad would change their expected graduation date.
