Montclair State University is institutionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Since the 2023 merger, Bloomfield College of Montclair State University is part of Montclair State rather than a separately accredited institution.
Institutional accreditation is relevant to federal financial-aid eligibility and indicates that an accreditor reviews the university against its standards. It does not guarantee that another college will accept a particular transfer course. Professional accreditation is a separate question: applicants to nursing or other fields with licensing requirements should verify the accreditation and state approval of the specific program they intend to enter.
First-year applicants generally need an undergraduate application and a secondary-school transcript showing graduation or an accepted equivalent. In Bloomfield's reported admissions criteria, high school GPA, school records and recommendations were required; class rank and college-preparatory coursework were considered but not required. Because the merger changed the institutional context, applicants should follow the requirements published for their current application route.
Bloomfield's reported first-year acceptance rate was about 70%: 1,113 of 1,596 applicants were admitted. That is a historical admission measure, not an individual applicant's chance of acceptance. SAT and ACT scores were considered rather than required in the reported criteria, and few enrolled first-year students submitted them. Applicants who studied primarily in a language other than English may need to document English proficiency. Nursing and other selective programs may impose additional conditions beyond general admission.
Bloomfield's reported undergraduate application fee was $65. Applicants should check the fee displayed in the current Montclair State application before submitting it, because the amount and waiver process can depend on the application route.
Students who cannot afford an application fee may be eligible for a waiver through an approved application process or documented financial need. A waiver should be requested according to the application's instructions, preferably before payment; an enrollment deposit or orientation charge is a different expense.
Army ROTC has been available to Bloomfield students through a cooperating host institution, rather than a Bloomfield-operated unit. Participation can require travel to the host campus for military-science classes, training or other activities.
ROTC participation and an ROTC scholarship are separate decisions. Scholarship eligibility and any subsequent service obligation depend on the program and an individual's contract. Students should confirm the current cross-enrollment arrangement, scheduling and application requirements with Montclair State and the Army ROTC host before building ROTC into an academic plan.
Bloomfield has accepted transfer applicants and generally considered credits from other accredited colleges. Its reported entry terms included fall, spring and summer. Current applicants should use Montclair State's transfer application instructions, since admission to the university and assignment to a Bloomfield-based program are related but distinct questions.
Transfer applicants should be prepared to provide official transcripts from every college attended. A program may ask for additional records or set its own GPA and prerequisite standards. Prior reporting also indicated possible credit through CLEP, DSST/DANTES and American Council on Education recommendations, but an exam or recommendation does not automatically satisfy a particular degree requirement.
Before enrolling, a transfer student should obtain an official evaluation showing which courses transfer, how they apply to the intended major and how many requirements remain. This is especially consequential for sequenced majors and for students bringing in substantial credit.
Bloomfield students can explore international study through opportunities available within Montclair State University. The appropriate program may be a semester, a shorter faculty-led experience or an approved external program; availability depends on the major, term and current offerings.
Academic approval should come before a student commits to a program. An adviser can establish whether proposed courses meet major or general-education requirements, while the financial-aid office can explain how a student's aid applies to that particular option. Travel, housing and program charges can differ considerably from a regular semester in New Jersey.
