Reported graduation outcomes show that 17% of the measured first-time student cohort completed within four years and 40% completed within six years. The overall reported graduation rate is also 40%. These are cohort measures, not a prediction of whether a particular student will finish.
Federal graduation-rate measures typically follow students who began as first-time, full-time degree seekers. That definition can leave out many transfer students and students whose enrollment patterns differ. A reported student retention rate of 66% measures a different question: whether students returned after their initial year, rather than whether they eventually earned a degree.
For planning purposes, the gap between the four- and six-year figures makes the intended time to degree consequential. Students can ask their academic adviser for a term-by-term course plan and check when required courses are offered, particularly if they expect to attend part time or transfer credits into a tightly sequenced major.
College Scorecard field-of-study figures report earnings measured one year after graduation for some Texas A&M University-San Antonio programs. They describe observed outcomes for the students included in each reported field; they are not starting-salary offers or forecasts for future graduates.
Examples in the reported figures include $45,025 for accounting and related services, $42,871 for business/commerce, and $33,306 for general biology. The reported figure for psychology is $26,917. Differences can reflect occupation, location, further study, work hours, and which graduates had earnings captured in the underlying records - not simply the value of a major.
Students comparing programs should use earnings alongside graduation rates, likely debt, program costs, and their own career plans. A one-year measure is especially limited for fields in which graduates commonly pursue additional education or licensure before entering their intended occupation.
