Strayer University is institutionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Institutional accreditation evaluates the university as a whole; it does not, by itself, establish that every individual program holds a separate professional accreditation.
Accreditation is an important condition for participation in federal student aid programs, although an individual student must also meet aid eligibility rules. It can matter when seeking transfer credit, but another college decides whether to accept specific courses. Likewise, students pursuing a licensed profession should check that profession's state requirements and any applicable programmatic accreditation before choosing a degree. Those questions cannot be settled from institutional accreditation alone.
Strayer University-Maryland reports an open-admission policy for undergraduate applicants. Open admission should not be confused with automatic eligibility for every degree: applicants still need to complete the university's enrollment process and meet the requirements for their chosen credential.
Prospective undergraduates should be prepared to document a high school diploma or equivalent and submit any records needed to establish prior college credit. Graduate applicants should check the requirements for their specific program, including the qualifying undergraduate credential and any additional academic or professional prerequisites. Rather than assuming that standardized tests, recommendations or a particular GPA are universally required, applicants should review the current requirements for their applicant category. They should also confirm when their intended courses begin and when documents must be received.
Applicants should confirm the current application charge, if any, in Strayer's official application before submitting it. An application fee is a charge for applying; it is distinct from tuition, course fees and any later enrollment-related payment.
If a charge appears, applicants who may qualify for an employer, military or other promotion should ask an admissions representative whether it applies to the application and whether approval must occur before payment. A promotion that reduces tuition should not be assumed to waive a separate application fee.
Prospective Strayer University-Maryland students should not assume that an Army, Air Force or Navy ROTC unit operates at the Suitland location. ROTC participation through a nearby host institution would require a specific cross-enrollment arrangement, not simply geographic proximity.
A student interested in commissioning should first ask the relevant ROTC host program whether Strayer enrollment qualifies for participation and scholarships. The host unit can explain course scheduling, physical and citizenship requirements, scholarship rules and any subsequent service obligation. Military education benefits and ROTC scholarships are different programs with different eligibility rules.
Transfer applicants should submit records of previous college study and request a course-by-course evaluation from Strayer University. Being eligible to enroll and having previous courses count toward a particular degree are separate decisions.
Applicants should provide official transcripts from each institution attended and identify any other learning they want evaluated, such as qualifying examinations, military training or documented professional experience. Strayer reports that it awards credit for some prior learning and accepts Advanced Placement credit, but the amount and applicability depend on its current policies and the degree requirements. Before committing, a transfer student should obtain a written evaluation showing which credits fulfill major or general education requirements, which count only as electives, and how many Strayer credits remain to graduate.
A student considering study abroad should establish whether Strayer University-Maryland has an approved option for the specific degree before making travel or payment plans. Enrollment at an overseas institution does not automatically produce Strayer credit.
For an independently arranged international course, the essential questions are whether Strayer will approve the course in advance, how the foreign transcript will be evaluated and whether the credits will satisfy a remaining degree requirement. Financial aid treatment also needs advance review; eligibility for an ordinary Strayer course does not establish eligibility for a third-party overseas program.
