IBS's documented institutional identity is closely connected to Buddhist education and community practice. Lectures, academic discussions, and religious or cultural gatherings are more relevant to its student experience than homecoming or varsity-sports traditions.
Applicants interested in a particular recurring event should check the current academic and community calendar for its date, location, and eligibility. Events hosted by the Buddhist Churches of America or another Berkeley institution should not automatically be described as IBS-operated events, even when IBS students participate.
Applicants should plan their housing and meals independently unless IBS confirms a specific arrangement for their program. Enrollment at a graduate institution in Berkeley should not be taken to include a residence-hall assignment or a meal plan.
Before signing a lease, students should establish where their required classes meet and how often they must travel there. A realistic off-campus budget should account for rent, utilities, groceries, transportation, and any deposits, in addition to tuition. Access to a neighboring institution's housing or dining facilities should be verified directly rather than assumed from geographic proximity.
