UWM is institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. UWM Flex credentials are UWM credentials; Flex is not a separately accredited university.
Institutional accreditation is relevant to federal student-aid eligibility and establishes that the university is reviewed against an accreditor's standards. It does not guarantee that another institution will accept a particular credit or that a degree satisfies a professional licensing board. Applicants to nursing or other regulated fields should verify the accreditation and licensing implications of their specific program and the state where they intend to practice; programmatic accreditation is distinct from UWM's institutional accreditation.
Admission to UWM Flex depends on both UWM's applicant requirements and eligibility for the chosen Flex program. Applicants should expect to submit an application and academic records; some programs also require prior college study or a professional qualification.
For first-time applicants, reported admissions criteria identify high school GPA and completion of a college-preparatory program as required. SAT and ACT scores are neither required nor recommended in those criteria, while recommendations and evidence of competencies may be considered without being mandatory. Program requirements can be more consequential: an RN-to-BSN applicant, for example, must check the nursing program's licensure and prior-education rules rather than rely on general freshman criteria.
Flex is not listed as having an open-admission policy. A reported 100% admission rate represented just five first-time applicants in that reporting group; it should not be read as a prediction of admission for a future applicant. Applicants educated outside the United States should also check UWM's current transcript and English-language proficiency instructions.
Applicants should check the fee displayed in the current UWM Flex application before submitting it. An application charge, if assessed, is separate from tuition and from the cost of a Flex subscription period.
Fee rules can differ by application route and applicant category. Anyone seeking a waiver should review the application's waiver instructions before payment, since submitting and paying first may prevent a waiver from being applied. Neither a university-wide application fee nor a fee for another UW campus should be assumed to govern a Flex application.
UWM has ROTC connections through its Milwaukee campus, but a Flex degree does not by itself establish eligibility to participate remotely. Army ROTC is associated with UWM; students interested in Air Force or Navy ROTC should verify current Milwaukee-area cross-enrollment arrangements with the relevant unit.
ROTC ordinarily involves scheduled instruction and physical training, so its in-person commitments may conflict with an otherwise online Flex plan. Scholarships have separate selection rules, and participation or scholarship acceptance can carry military service obligations. A prospective participant should obtain confirmation from both the ROTC unit and the Flex program that the academic schedule and degree meet the unit's requirements.
Transfer applicants to UWM Flex need an evaluation of previous college work against the requirements of their intended UWM program. Being admitted and having every previous course count toward a degree are different decisions.
Applicants should be prepared to provide official transcripts from each college attended. Program staff can then determine how prior credits meet general education, prerequisite and major requirements, and which competencies must still be completed. This is especially important for applicants entering nursing or another specialized field, where a course may transfer as credit without fulfilling a particular professional requirement.
Before enrolling, ask for a program-specific credit evaluation and clarify any minimum UWM credits, required assessments or licensure conditions. A general transfer-equivalency listing is useful for planning, but it is not a substitute for that evaluation.
UWM offers international education opportunities through its wider university programs, but a traditional semester abroad should not be assumed to fit a UWM Flex degree. Flex students need advance academic approval before counting work completed abroad toward their competency-based requirements.
UWM study-abroad options may include semester and shorter programs for eligible students. A Flex student considering one should ask both the study-abroad office and the Flex program how participation would affect degree progress, subscription timing and financial aid. Eligibility for a UWM-sponsored or approved third-party program depends on the individual program's rules.
