Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) was founded in 1824 by Stephen Van Rensselaer, a wealthy landowner and politician, with the aim of teaching individuals the application of science to everyday life. Initially established to train engineers for the Erie Canal project, the Rensselaer School, as it was first known, was the first school of science and civil engineering to have a continuous existence in any English-speaking country. The school opened its doors on January 5, 1825, at the Old Bank Place in Troy, New York. In 1833, the school's name was changed to the Rensselaer Institute, and in the 1850s, its purpose was broadened to become a polytechnic institution. The name was finally changed to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1861.
A significant event in RPI's early history was the Great Fire of 1862, which destroyed over 500 buildings in Troy and gutted 75 acres in the city's center. The fire also destroyed the "Infant School" building that housed the Institute at the time. Columbia University proposed that Rensselaer leave Troy and merge with its New York City campus, but the proposal was ultimately rejected. Instead, the campus moved from the crowded downtown area to the hillside, providing room for expansion.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has a strong history of promoting diversity and inclusion. In 1881, Garnett Douglass Baltimore became the first African-American student at RPI to earn a degree. The Institute admitted its first female students in 1953 and appointed its first female faculty member in 1971.
During World War II, RPI played a significant role in the war effort by conducting research on radar and other military technologies and training thousands of engineers and scientists.
