OHSU is institutionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). Institutional accreditation evaluates the university as a whole; it does not mean that every professional program has the same separate approval.
Professional accreditation matters especially in licensed health fields. Relevant examples include accreditation of the MD program through the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, dental education through the Commission on Dental Accreditation, nursing programs through the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, pharmacy education through the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, and public health education through the Council on Education for Public Health. An applicant should verify the status of the specific degree and location they intend to enter, because eligibility for licensing or certification can also depend on state rules and other requirements.
Institutional accreditation is relevant to federal financial aid eligibility and may be considered in transfer-credit decisions. It does not, by itself, require another school to accept particular credits or confer a professional license.
OHSU does not have one undergraduate admissions checklist that fits every program. Applicants apply to a particular school and degree pathway, and health-professions programs commonly require prior coursework, transcripts and additional application materials.
For undergraduate nursing, applicants should check the applicable pathway's prerequisite courses, minimum grades, application system and deadline before applying. Applicants to graduate or professional programs may also need a prior degree, recommendations, statements, relevant experience, interviews or other program-specific materials. International applicants should check the program's rules for evaluating non-U.S. coursework and demonstrating English proficiency.
High school completion or an accepted equivalent is relevant to degree-seeking admission, but applicants should not interpret that as a requirement to hold a GED specifically. Likewise, SAT or ACT rules for a typical freshman college applicant should not be assumed to apply to OHSU's transfer-oriented or professional pathways. Admission is selective by program; there is no useful institution-wide freshman acceptance rate to substitute for a program's published criteria.
Application charges at OHSU depend on the program and application route. A reported undergraduate application fee is $60, but applicants should confirm the amount displayed for their chosen program before submitting: a centralized application service may charge its own fee, and professional programs can use different processes.
Fee-waiver rules also vary by application system and program. An applicant seeking a waiver should review both the program's instructions and any centralized application service's waiver process before paying or submitting. An application fee is separate from a tuition deposit or any later enrollment charge.
OHSU is not known to operate its own Army, Air Force or Navy ROTC unit. Prospective students should not assume that enrollment at a Portland-area university with ROTC automatically makes an OHSU degree compatible with that unit's cross-enrollment rules.
Students interested in ROTC should ask the host unit and their intended OHSU program whether cross-enrollment is permitted, whether required military-science courses fit the academic schedule, and whether the degree qualifies for a particular scholarship or commissioning route. ROTC scholarships can carry eligibility conditions and post-graduation service obligations. Separate military pathways for health-professions students may have different application and service terms.
Transfer and prior-college coursework are central to many OHSU entry routes, but admission to a program and acceptance of individual credits are separate decisions. OHSU generally considers credits from accredited institutions; each school determines whether courses satisfy its own prerequisites and degree requirements.
Applicants should submit official transcripts from every college attended and compare completed courses with the intended program's prerequisite list. Nursing pathways, for example, may specify science courses, grades and limits on when certain prerequisites must be completed. Program start terms and application deadlines differ; fall and summer entry should not be treated as options for every degree.
Some forms of exam or recommended credit, including AP, CLEP, DSST and ACE-recommended credit, may be considered under applicable policies. Acceptance of such credit does not establish that it will fulfill a particular clinical program prerequisite. Before enrolling in another course to prepare for transfer, request a program-specific review of its equivalency and ask what official transfer-credit evaluation is available after admission.
OHSU's international opportunities are more likely to take the form of approved global health, research or clinical experiences than a conventional semester abroad built into a broad undergraduate curriculum. Availability depends on the school, degree and current partnerships.
Students considering an international placement need advance academic approval. Clinical experiences can involve additional supervision, patient-care restrictions, insurance, safety requirements and arrangements with a host organization. Applicants should ask their program whether an opportunity earns degree credit, how a placement is selected and whether financial aid can apply; an independently arranged overseas experience should not be assumed to count toward graduation.
