Overview

The Université Nice Sophia Antipolis (UNS) is a public university that can be found in the southeast coast of Nice, France. It was created in 1965 but it traces its roots as far back as 1639 to a legal body founded by the Princes of Savoy. The university considers itself as a key player in the Sophia Antipolis technology park, which has been described as the Silicon Valley of Europe. Thus, UNS specializes in microelectronics, software and related services within the larger framework of its parent organization’s vision of creating a 21st-century model for French universities.

UNS offers over 200 courses in five disciplines: law, economics, and management; arts, letters, and languages; human and social sciences; science, technology, and healthcare; and science and technology of physical activity and sports. They also have professional degree specialties, masters courses, and engineering degrees. As part of its international policy, it has concluded over 600 Erasmus and bilateral cooperation agreements with various universities around the world.

The present-day UNS originated from the Collegium Jurisconsultorum Niciensium, which was a body of lawyers and lawyer-consultants established in 1639 by the Princes of Savoy. This body ceased to exist when the then County of Nice was annexed to France in 1860. From the 1930s to 1940s, UNS created the Centre Universitaire Méditerranéen and added various institutes. In 2019, it was merged with the University of Côte d'Azur (UCA).

The University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis has produced many accomplished individuals. Among them are Mohammed VI of Morocco, the current king of Morocco and one of the richest kings of the world; Nobel Prize winning writer J. M. G. Le Clézio; and English philosopher Simon Critchley.

UNS has received recognition for being one of the top 10 universities in France due to its comprehensive, research-intensive programs. Globally, it has received largely varying rankings from different organizations which put it anywhere between the top 300 to 700 universities.

UNS shares in the future direction of the University of Côte d'Azur to instill research excellence, spur growth in their locality, offer attractive educational programs, and provide various opportunities to people in the university.

True to its thrust as a technology leader, UNS has planned the FabLab, which focuses on the prototyping of electronic boards for the Internet of Things.

In the next decade, UNS will join the University of Côte d'Azur in establishing a world-class transdisciplinary university driven by innovation. Dubbed as the UCA Joint, Excellent and Dynamic Initiative (JEDI), it will feature infrastructure projects like an educational virtual innovation center and a modelling, simulation, and interaction house.
