The Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, also known as Skoltech, is a private graduate research institute nestled in Moscow, Russia. It was built in 2011 through the collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The institute’s goal is to cultivate a new generation of entrepreneurs and researchers. It combines the best of Russian and international educational and research methodologies with a special focus on entrepreneurship and innovation.
The institute provides all courses in English to cater to international students. It also focuses on creating interdisciplinary programs focusing on various domains which include advanced studies, data science and artificial intelligence, cutting-edge engineering and advanced materials, life sciences and biomedicine, quantum technology, and energy efficiency.
Currently, Skoltech offers two degree-granting programs, Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Students can focus on one area of interest. Its MSc programs offer a unique education experience divided into Year 1, which focuses on theoretical studies, and Year 2, which focuses on research. These programs are also organized into streams (categories) that follow the Skoltech Learning Outcomes Framework. These include the Science, Technology, and Engineering stream which focuses on disciplinary and interdisciplinary courses that target scientific and engineering fundamentals; the Sector stream which involves practical projects and industrial immersions; the Entrepreneurship and Innovation stream which is composed of a compulsory workshop and elective courses; the Research and MSc Thesis Project stream which includes the research work and thesis defense; and the Options sector which includes all other options for additional research projects.
The MSc programs include study areas such as Data Science, Manufacturing Technologies, Energy Systems, Life Sciences, Information Science and Technology, Mathematical and Theoretical Physics, and Photonics and Quantum Materials. They also offer courses on Materials Science, Space and Engineering Systems, and Petroleum Engineering. On the other hand, the PhD programs they offer often focus on Physics, Mathematics and Mechanics, Materials Science, and Life Sciences, to name a few.
