The university is one of the country’s leading traditional schools recognized for its advanced research activities and academic excellence. As one of the biggest technical universities in Eastern and Central Europe, it is also known globally for its outstanding faculty and academic programs. This is attributed to the university’s multidisciplinary approach in academics and research while prioritizing new technology.

The establishment of the university was also one of the steps in redefining the Romanian states after the conclusion of World War I.

The university adopted several names from its founding until it settled with the current one, Politehnica University of Timișoara. Some of its faculties and departments also underwent name changes over the years. For instance, the Department of Communication and Foreign Languages came to be called the Faculty of Communication Sciences beginning in 2011. It is also during this year that the institution first acquired the distinction of being an advanced research and technical university, a recognition bestowed by the country’s Ministry of Education and Technology. It is the only institution to obtain this distinction in all of Western Romania.

Today, the university has a total of 25 departments divided among 10 faculties: the (1) Faculty of Architecture and City Planning, (2) Faculty of Automation and Computers, (3) Faculty of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, (4) Faculty of Civil Engineering, (5) Faculty of Communication Sciences, (6) Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering, (7) Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering, (8) Faculty of Engineering in Hunedoara, (9) Faculty of Management in Production and Transportation, and (10) Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
