Mines ParisTech (often abbreviated to Les Mines) is a renowned engineering school with campuses in Paris, Evry, Sophia Antipolis, and Fontainebleau in France. Les Mines is a constituent college of the Universté PSL, which consists of other schools. The college is considered a prestigious engineering school in the EU for its academic programs as well as research performance.

From its original mission of training mining engineers when it was founded in 1783, the college has since evolved to offer broad disciplines that infuse technical courses like mathematics and physics with non-engineering fields of study such as economics, social sciences and the arts. Les Mines aims to prepare its students for positions in management, research, operations, and development. Notably, the Master of Science and Executive Engineering ranks among the best graduate programs in France.

Mines ParisTech provides students with different degree paths. At the diploma level, the Master of Science and Executive Engineering confers engineering degrees similar to the diplomas offered in Ecole des Ponts ParisTech and Ecole Centrale Paris. Overall, the college provides 19 doctoral schools and 9 master’s programs in a wide range of fields.

On the other hand, the Corps of Mines offers technical programs, considered one of the best in France, which requires three years of study inclusive of two long internships and non-technical courses in areas like economics and public institutions.

Adding to the college’s reputation, its exchange program links students with prestigious universities in the world. They include CalTech, MIT, National University of Singapore, Tokyo Tech, and Novosibirsk State University. The program is offered in the third semester.

Admission to Les Mines is highly selective, particularly in its Civil Engineering program. French students must compete in a national examination to earn a slot in the college. Conversely, international students wanting to enrol in Les Mines have to compete for the ten slots open to foreign students every year.

The most competitive students, as well as industry practitioners, can pursue research in the college leveraging several research centers housed in its campuses. These centers focus on specialized fields, among others, in energy and processes, earth science and environment, mathematics and systems, economics, society, mechanical and materials engineering.

Mines ParisTech was founded by a decree of King Louis XVI. The college closed down in the years following the French Revolution, but it managed to open again in 1794. Notable alumni include Maurice Allais (Nobel Prize in Economics), Jean-Louis Bianco (former president of France) and Louis Paul Cailletet (physicist and inventor).
