Founded in 1968, it has more than 25,000 students spread throughout its four campuses in São Carlos, Sorocaba, Lagoa do Sino, and Araras. About 20% of the student body take up graduate studies with the student-staff ratio at 15:1.
A top-rated university in the region, UFSCar has ranked among the best 10 universities in the country and 16th in Latin America. The university is the first federal tertiary school in São Paulo. Today, it is regarded for the depth of its faculty, nearly all of whom have Ph.D. or Masters degrees.
The degree programs are grouped by broad disciplines such as Social Sciences; Physical Sciences; Engineering and Technology; Business and Economics; Education, Arts and Humanities; Clinical and Preclinical Studies; and Computer Science. Physical science degrees include Mathematics, Geology, Chemistry, and Astronomy. On the other hand, the Engineering department confers degrees in Civil, Electrical, Electronic, Chemical, Mechanical, and General engineering. As for arts and humanities, students can choose from History, Languages, Philosophy, and Literature, among others.
Meanwhile, medical degrees start with a general education that includes an introduction to clinical procedures and medical solutions. Students taking Dentistry, for example, are required to take courses in Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Physiology before specializing in their field.
The Federal University of São Carlos also administers extension activities and special programs. Particularly, about 80 curricular integration activities between research, teaching, and outreach are conducted yearly.
The university boasts an extensive infrastructure. The main campus alone houses 300 laboratories, a library with 280,000 volumes of works, two theaters, 12 auditoriums, and nine lecture halls. On the other hand, the Araras campus features 28 laboratories for teaching and research, its own library, an amphitheater, and an aquatic center. The other two campuses, meanwhile, have 54 laboratories between them, with the former housing two auditoriums and the latter a computer laboratory.
The events leading to the university’s foundation in 1968 saw a federal statute having been passed in the early sixties calling for a university in São Carlos with the charter being only approved years later. UFSCar initially offered courses in natural sciences before introducing more specialties including graduate studies in the 1990s. These include opening the faculties for psychology and information science in 1994, for literature and image and sound in 1996, and music in 2004.
