The 1st edition of Research.com ranking of the best universities in the field
of Materials Science is based on data consolidated from
multiple data sources including OpenAlex and CrossRef. The bibliometric data for
evaluating the citation-based metrics were gathered on 06-12-2021.
Position in the ranking is based on a sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all ranking
scientist's affiliated with a given institution. D-index
only includes papers and citation
values for an examined discipline.

The scope of our Materials Science research
Our best universities ranking is a credible list of
leading scientists from the area of Materials Science ,
created using a thorough study
of 166,880 scholars discovered from
various bibliometric data sources. For the area of
Materials Science, more than 11166 researchers were
examined.
What is D-index acceptance threshold for Materials Science
The D-index threshold for including a researcher to be
considered is set to 40 if
most of their publications are in the field of Materials Science. The
acceptance factors for researchers to be
considered into the ranking of top researchers are based on the D-index,
ratio of the publications made within the given
field of study plus the awards and achievements of the
researchers. The D-index threshold for including leading
scientists is set as an increment of 10 depending on the total number of
scholars projected for each
scientific field whilst guaranteeing that the top 1% of
leading scholars are considered into the ranking.
There should be a proximity of 30% or less between a
scholar’s general H-index and their D-index.
Additional verification practices
Because our primary mission is to make sure that only
genuine scholars are mentioned in
our ranking we realize that numbers are never
supposed to be a full tool to evaluate the
work of scholars. For that reason
we manually check every profile and cross-correlate it against publications in a
varied range of reliable sources. While it’s not a
factor impacting a researcher’s position in
the ranking, the number of papers published in
major journals and conference proceedings should form a
reliable secondary indication of their contribution to research in a
given discipline. Position in the ranking is
established using every scientist’s D-index
with the help of information compiled from OpenAlex and
CrossRef, which are the most prominent and well-established bibliometric
databases of this type open to the research community. A
comprehensive definition of our research process
can be found on our
methodology page.
Our mission
Our goal is to inspire scholars,
businessmen and administrative bodies
around the world to examine where prominent experts are heading
and to offer an opportunity for the entire scientific community to
get to know who the leading experts in specific
areas of study, in various countries, or even within research
institutions are.
