The 1st edition of Research.com ranking of the best universities in the discipline
of Materials Science is based on data combined from
a wide range of data sources including OpenAlex and CrossRef. The bibliometric data for
estimating the citation-based metrics were acquired on 06-12-2021.
Position in the ranking is based on a sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all ranking
scholar’s affiliated with a given institution. D-index
includes exclusively publications and citation
metrics for an examined discipline.

The scope of our Materials Science research
Our best universities ranking is a reliable lineup of
leading scholars from the area of Materials Science ,
established by means of a thorough examination
of 166,880 scholars discovered from
a variety of bibliometric data sources. For the discipline of
Materials Science, more than 11166 researchers were
analysed.
What is D-index acceptance threshold for Materials Science
The D-index threshold for accepting a scholar to be
considered is placed at 40 if
most of their publications are in the field of Materials Science. The
acceptance criteria for researchers to be
considered into the ranking of top researchers are based on the D-index,
ratio of the contributions made within the given
area in addition to the awards and achievements of the
scholars. The D-index threshold for including top
scholars is set as an increment of 10 depending on the overall number of
scholars estimated for each
discipline whilst making sure that the top 1% of
best researchers are incorporated into the list.
There should be a proximity of 30% or less between a
scientist’s general H-index and their D-index.
Other verification rules
As our primary aim is to guarantee that only
actual researchers are mentioned in
the ranking we are aware that raw data are never
supposed to be a complete measure to quantify the
work of researchers. Because of that
we manually check every profile and cross-correlate it against publications in a
broad range of trustworthy sources. Although it’s not a
element contributing to a scholar’s position in
our ranking, the number of papers published in
well-known journals and conference proceedings should form a
valuable secondary signal of their contribution to research in a
specific discipline. Position in the ranking is
based on every researcher’s D-index
using information collected from OpenAlex and
CrossRef, which are the most trustworthy and well-established bibliometric
databases of this kind open to the scientific community. A
thorough overview of our research process
can be found on our
methodology page.
Our mission
Our aim is to motivate scientists,
companies and decision-makers
around the world to investigate where prominent experts are heading
and to provide a way for the entire research community to
get to know who the leading experts in specific
areas of study, in different countries, or even within research
institutions are.
