Overview of Data Sources and Ranking Methodology
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Business and Management Universities in Australia Ranking was meticulously developed using comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by a variety of other reputable data sources. Bibliometric data essential for the citation-based metrics underpinning the ranking were collected on 2024-11-27, ensuring up-to-date accuracy and relevance.
A university's position in this ranking is determined by the combined D-index (Discipline H-index) scores of all affiliated scholars whose primary publication focus is on Business and Management. The D-index is strictly discipline-specific and considers only those publications and corresponding citation data that pertain directly to Business and Management, providing an accurate reflection of an institution’s specialised research strength in the field.
Scope and Criteria of Research
The scope of this research is both broad and detailed. In total, 279,971 scientist profiles from a range of bibliometric data sources were examined, with 9,829 scientists specifically identified and analyzed within the Business and Management discipline. To ensure only highly distinguished scholars were included, a minimum D-index threshold of 30 was established, with the additional requirement that a majority of each researcher’s top-tier publications reside within Business and Management.
Furthermore, awards and significant achievements in the field were factored into the assessment. The threshold for D-index qualification among researchers was incrementally adjusted (in steps of 10) relative to the estimated number of scholars in each discipline, with the express aim of capturing the top 1% of eminent scholars in the field. To maintain the integrity of discipline-specific expertise, it was also required that the proximity between a scientist’s general H-index and D-index remain at or below 30%. These careful parameters were set to guarantee that the ranking highlights not only prolific scholars but also those with a deep and genuine engagement with Business and Management research. Awards and field-specific achievements played a role in further affirming excellence.
Rigorous Verification and Supplementary Evaluation
Recognizing the inherent limitations of raw data, the Research.com team undertook a thorough manual verification of all scientist profiles. This process ensured that each profile was cross-referenced against publications listed in a diverse array of trustworthy bibliometric databases. Although the sheer number of papers published in influential journals and conference proceedings was not used to directly determine a researcher’s rank, this metric remains a useful proxy for evaluating scientific contribution within a specific discipline.
A researcher's ranking position is derived from their H-index as recorded in OpenAlex and CrossRef—currently the most respected and authoritative bibliometric sources available to the global research community. Full transparency on our methods and data-handling practices is available on our methodology page. We encourage interested parties to explore this resource to gain a deeper understanding of the careful work underpinning our ranking system.
