Scope of the special issue:

The increasing volume of data generated by companies, scientific practitioners, the web, electronic commerce sites, etc. has posed the need of automated techniques to analyze data as an essential problem. The answer to this problem is nowadays known as Data Science, a data driven discovery approach having as goal the understanding of large data sets by converting data into knowledge. Under the framework of Data science, several important data based research paradigms are subsumed: data mining, data analytics, machine learning and big data.

Data Science covers all the issues appearing in the data-driven discovery process, from gathering and storage of data to accessing it, visualization and analysis. Data Science finds application in many different domains (see e.g. https://www.kaggle.com/competitions), ranging from genomic to marketing, from astronomy to web, from health systems to image/video understanding, etc.

In this special issue we focus on the algorithmic side of Data Science devoted to extracting patterns or models from data. In particular we encourage submissions containing original research and innovative results including (but not limited to) the following topics (focused on the 3 V\'s, Volume, Variety and velocity):

New methods for analyzing data.
Large-scale machine learning systems and algorithms.
Map-Reduce and Spark based designed solutions to big data problems.
Visualization of high-dimensional datasets.
Data preprocessing (discretization, feature selection, ...)
New data mining algorithms (classification, clustering, associations, ...)
Relational and structured learning algorithms.
Applications of data science.

All papers should be submitted to KNOSYS/KBS journal EES website http://ees.elsevier.com/knosys/ and choose the Special Issue Article Type “VVVDS”.
